The Snake Roll Cast in Slow Motion

Fast, Easy and Efficient

The ‘Snake roll’ cast was developed by Simon Gawesworth who is arguably one of the best and most respected spey casters in the world and probably the best spey casting instructor that has ever graced our sport. It is a simple, easy way to change directions (lift a fly line from the water and place it 90 degrees from where it began) and as with all of the spey casts, it is done without a backcast. The ‘snake roll’ cast is often done as a double spey substitute and can also be done without much change of direction. Here in this video, a twelve-year-old boy demonstrates the snake roll cast with very little change of direction on a lake after being taught the cast only ten minutes earlier.
